I have the same feeling
I work my upper back and it seems that I don't feel any pain at all
I wonder if I was doign it wrong at first but my results were outstanding
SO I guess it depends on the workout
I use a dumbbell then I lean over a chair and put my hand on the chair for support, while holding the dumbbell on my other hand I lift it up and do 3 sets of 20 reps, 20lbs
Try not doing one side with one dumbbell at a time, it's less efficient and takes more time. Try rowing with two dumbbells or a barbell :)
Just like when doing bicep curls I like to focus on one bicep then another; same for each workout I perform.
