McDonald's normal practice was to super-heat their coffee to make people wait longer before drinking it, reducing the chance that the person would go back for a refill (cheap/free refills hurt McDonald's profit margin). The initial $2 million+ award was punitive based on McDonald's coffee sales for two days, imposed to compel McDonald's to serve normal-temperature coffee instead of just continuing to serve super-heated coffee and pay the occasional damage claim.
